if it's sunday it's "meet the press." it's monday, january 4th. coming up on "early today," new year, new opportunities for the candidates to attack one another. a sprint to the iowa caucuses begin with a flurry between the front runners. armed stand off in oregon with anti-government activists heats up, as protesters pledge to die for their cause. rested, rexed and ready to tackle gun control using the power of the presidency. through executive privilege and his attorney general. plus, saudi arabia cuts ties with iran, who warns of divine vengeance. the powerball jackpot exploded to over $400 million. the nfl matchup. it's officially 2016. finally at long last, we can talk about the race for president. today, hillary clinton gets a major jolt as her husband hits the campaign trail in new hampshire for the first time on her behalf. donald trump's attacks on them are getting sharper. we start with kristen welker. >> reporter: donald trump increasingly looking beyond his gop rivals and taking aim at the democratic front runner. >> they've created isis. hillary clinton created isis with obama. >> reporter: hillary clinton firing back in new hampshire. >> the republicans seem to have a particular fixation on blaming president obama and me for everything that happens in the world. >> reporter: trump is also tying clinton to her husband's past sexual infidelities. >> it hasn't been a pretty picture for her or bill. i'm the only one willing to talk about his problems. i mean, what he did and what he has gone through, i think, is frankly, terribly, especially if

she wants to play the woman card. >> reporter: clinton counting on the former president to bolster her campaign on monday in new hampshire. >> he is so excited about coming back to the granite state. >> reporter: the issue won't be on trump, when a republican state lawmaker hackeled clinton about her husband's past. >> reporter: trump's comments were used in a muslim terror recruitvideo. >> i have to say what i have to say. >> reporter: clinton continues to slam his het rirhetoric. >> it's shameful and counterproductive. >> reporter: the other republican front runners giving donald trump a pass. >> they don't exist because of donald trump. >> let's not get concerned about how offended our enemies are.

>> reporter: the war of words between the front runners, a crush of candidates in iowa and new hampshire, both states pivot pivotal. >> front runners have to keep winning. expectations for clinton are sky high, and expectations for trump are sky high. it's been an angry race, and not just for the candidates. a new online poll but nbc news surveymonkey and esquire. 49% of americans say they feel agar now about current events than one year ago. whites are the angriest. 54%. latinos, 43%s. african-americans at 33%. republicans are angrier than democrats. 53% of women are angrier with current events compared to 44% of men. back from vacation, president obama has gun laws in the crosshairs, apparently ready to bypass congress to tighten

the rules. edward lawrence is in washington. the president and attorney general will meet in a few hours. what's their focus going to be? >> it's going to be gun control, gigi. the president outlined gun control as the most important issue to tackle this year. he's expected to do it by bypassing congress. >> reporter: president obama fresh off his hawaiian vacation and taking aim at gun control. he meets with attorney general loretta lynch to talk about ways to increase background checks for people who buy guns. the president during his weekly radio address defended his position. >> it is a policy supported by some 90% of the american people. it was supported by a majority of nra households. but the gun lobby mobilized against it and the senate blocked it. >> reporter: hillary clinton applauds the move to use executive orders to increase background checks for gun buyers. republican candidates disagree. >> now this president wants to act as if he is a king, as if he

is a dictator. if he wants to make changes to the laws, go to congress and convince congress they're necessary. >> he's going to sign another executive order. having to do with the second amendment, having to do with guns. i will veto that. i will unsign that so fast. >> his first impulse always is to take rights away from law-abiding citizens, and it's wrong. >> reporter: still, this is at the top of the president's agenda for his final year in office. >> president obama is also expected to conduct a three-month review of other items, to eother steps to take curb gun violence. >> thanks. now a developing story in oregon, where anti-government activists are occupying a government building at a wildlife refuge. they're protesting the prison sentences of two ranchers and what they call the tyranny of the federal government. kristen dahlgren has more. >> reporter: a call to arms. >> this will become a base place

for patriots from all over the country to come and be housed here and live here. we're planning on staying here several years. >> reporter: the group of armed protesters taking over the mallard national wildlife refuge. a nevada rancher known for his 2014 stand off with federal authorities over grazing rights. his brother gave us a tour. >> we're here to promote the constitution, the supreme law of the land, and to help the people reestablish their rights. >> reporter: this latest standoff started after weeks of tension, and a peaceful protest on saturday. dozens rallying in support of dwight and steve hammond, two oregon ranchers facing jail time for lighting fires on federal land. >> i'm going to jail for five years. seems like a bit of an overkill. >> reporter: the hammonds already served time before a judge ruled it wasn't enough. >> they wanted to stand up for

their rights. we will be by their side. >> reporter: they will report to federal prison on sunday, and the bundys don't speak for them. it hasn't stopped the standoff. one member posting a good-bye video to his family. >> i am 100% willing to lay my life down. >> reporter: the sheriff warned people to stay away from the refuge. so far, officials, including the fbi, have kept a low profile. >> they'll have to make some decision at some point. they can't let people come in there at will. >> reporter: protesters said they won't get violent unless the government does. some locals worry it won't end well. >> people are afraid. >> reporter: as the militants promise, they won't back down. kristen dahlgren, nbc news. this morning, communities along the mississippi river continue the cleanup effort after historic flooding. the death sttoll stands at 25 across illinois and missouri, even as the waters recede.

on sunday, illinois authorities recovered the body of an 18-year-old, killed when his vehicle was swept by the flood waters. the river reached a record crest in ca and the army core of engineers is inspecting levies. the anyoministry of foreign affairs said it severed diplomatic ties with iran. this came days after violent protests that included attacks on the saudi embassy in tehran. the protests broke out after saudi arabia executed 47 people, including a shiite cleric. iranian president rouhani took to twitter, saying he condemned the execution, an act that violates human rights and islamic values. he also said the attack on the saudi embassy was by no means justified. iran's top leader said there would be, quote, divine revenge.

u.s. officials called for diplomatic engagement and a step to ease tension in the region. ethan couch, the so-called affluenza teen, is launching a high profile defense to fight his extradition from mexico to the u.s. a mexican lawyer confirms he's representing tou ining couch. he says the 18-year-old was unlawfully detained in puerto vallarta last week and hasn't committed a crime in mexico. immigration attorneys say the legal process could drag on for months. couch's month tonya was deported to the u.s. last week. she's awaiting extradition from los angeles to texas. that could happen early this week. the pair had been on the run since failing to check in with his probation officer. ethan couch killed four people when he drove drunk in 2013. nbc meteorologist bill karins is here with your monday forecast. good morning. >> good morning. >> is it really going to get cold? >> some areas it's cold and

other areas are icy. some poreporting portland, oreg, scraping ice. be careful driving. it's lifted to the north. the problem is, the cold air was trapped in the valley. as the system went through last night, it's dropping a sheet of ice in numerous spots. california, a lot of light rain. san francisco, costal areas. rains south of san diego, trying to push to the north. we'll watch that today. two storms. one weaker one dealing with today, light rains through california. bringing areas of snow to the sierras. the second storm will come on tuesday, spinning tuesday night along the pacific northwest coast. this will have the heavier rain and snow, maybe the possibility of minor problems with debris flows in the burn areas. four to five inches at most. some of the higher elevations. we will be watching a widespread one to three inch rainfall from

camille cosby is set to testify on wednesday in a defamation suit against her husband in massachusetts. it's a civil suit brought by several women, accusing the comedian of sexually assaulting them. the lawsuit is unrelated to the criminal charges brought against cosby last week in pennsylvania. more than 500 employees at san bernardino's inland regional center are returning to work today. the center had been closed since december 2nd when syed farook and his wife killed 14 and wounded others. a memorial service will be held in honor of the victims today. a pennsylvania man was caught speeding at 86 miles per hour in new york yesterday. after his new york driver's license had been suspected, wait for it, 88 times. the 43-year-old eric dunbar was also caught for unlawfully having a second unexpired

men were recovered from a wisconsin lake. the canoe was found overturned in the water. two other men are still missing. all four men were from illinois in their early 20s. earlier, the police chief incorrectly stated all four bodies had been recovered. the search will resume early this morning. in southern california, a domino's delivery driver allegedly stabbed a customer over an argument over the delivery time. according to police, the pizza was one and a half hours late. the 20-year-old customer was treated for minor injuries. domi domino's released a statement, saying they're shocked by the allegation and hope the customer is safe. i mean, when you're hungry, you get angry. hundreds of people channelled their inner polar bear this new year's eve. they participated in the polar bear challenge. temperatures were 7 degrees. it was for a good cause. >> that's a real polar bear challenge. >> it's commitment.
